Content in Christ

Philippians 4:11 -- "Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have."

Are you content with what you have? I have to admit this is an area I still struggle with. We live in a society that breeds discontentment. Advertising is constantly encouraging you to buy this new product or the next model of something you already have. It's hard to practice contentment in a world which is always pushing the next supposed great thing.

However, God wants us to be satisfied with what we have -- more importantly, God wants us to be satisfied with Him. The stuff just doesn't matter. It's nice while we are here, but we can't take it with us, it will all fade away. Most of the time, the stuff just becomes distractions from where our focus should stay -- on Christ.

The only way to learn contentment, especially in the world today, is to repent and ask God to help you be happy with what you have. You can't have joy in your heart if you are always thinking about what you don't have. Instead count your blessings and focus on what you do have. For most of us, that is family and friends -- the relationships we form. For all of us who believe, that is God who is ready and willing to help you overcome the temptations of the world and learn to be content in Him.
