1 & 2 Thessalonians (Bible in 90 Days)

The books of Thessalonians are full of hope for Jesus’ second coming. Paul established the Thessalonian church during his second missionary journey. He wrote these letters to the Thessalonians soon after to strengthen their faith and to explain and assure believers of Christ’s return.

The church in Thessalonica was full of faithful people, but young—they needed guidance to mature and grow. There was a misunderstanding about the timing of Christ’s second coming. The people were confused and sad when their loved ones began to die before Christ’s return. Paul intended to clear the confusion and give them praise, hope and assurance during this time of persecution and loneliness.

“For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.” (1 Thessalonians 4:14)

Paul challenges the believers to daily please God by avoiding sexual immorality, loving each other and living purely in a sinful world. He also comforts the people with the hope of the resurrection and be prepared for His return that can occur at any moment. Paul encourages the believers to encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient and kind to everyone, continually be joyful, pray and give thanks and avoid evil.

“May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ.” (2 Thessalonians 3:5)
