Small Acts of Kindness

John 15:13 -- “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

That is a daunting idea -- “to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Honestly, that’s downright scary if you think of it in terms of jumping in front of a bullet or something similar. However  sacrifice doesn't always mean life and death.

Laying down your life can happen a little bit each day. By joining a friend at a movie you don’t want to see, but you know it would really make them happy; babysitting for a friend when you’d rather do anything else; switching shifts so a friend could spend a little extra time with family in town -- all of these are examples of small ways to sacrifice, to lay down your life for your friends.

It may not seem like much in this perspective, then again maybe it does, but God doesn't focus on the scale of greatness the way we tend to. God concentrates on your heart, to be selfless and think of others before ourselves. These are all small acts of kindness, but it goes a long way in terms of loving a friend.

Dear Lord,
Help me to get my mind off of myself and focus more on others. Help me to lay down my life for a friend and to be more conscious of small acts of kindness throughout the week.
